Digitisation for production and integration of machine data into ERP

In the evolving landscape of Industry 4.0, manufacturers face a significant challenge—disparate software tools and manual communication processes that create data inaccuracies and inefficiencies. Shopfloors struggle with integrating various software systems, leading to interoperability issues and hindered production workflows. The SmartProd ERP Project, a collaboration between FIP-AM@UT and Fraunhofer IPT, addresses these challenges head-on, partnering with HTM Aerotec to drive digital transformation.

The SmartProd ERP tackles two primary objectives:
1. Standardised Connection Protocol: To resolve the fragmentation caused by diverse software tools, this initiative introduces a standardised connection protocol. This aims to unify communication across ERP, PLM, and machine tooling management systems, ensuring seamless data flow and reducing the need for manual intervention.

2. Automated Machine Data Integration: At HTM Aerotec, a leader in high-precision aerospace manufacturing, current practices involve cumbersome manual documentation of machine data. The objective is to automate this process by integrating machine data directly into the ERP system. By analysing existing software systems and developing a robust data acquisition solution, the project will streamline data entry from machine tools, enhancing accuracy and operational efficiency.

The overarching goal of SmartProd ERP is to enhance operational efficiency and competitiveness by facilitating a smooth digital transformation. By standardising data connections and automating data integration, the project not only addresses current interoperability issues but also sets a new standard for data accuracy and process optimisation.

APPROACH

To address HTM Aerotec’s digitisation challenge, the FIP-AM@UT team started with a current state analysis to identify the different software systems in place along the production process. This analysis provides insight into the most beneficial digital connections to develop in order improve the company’s production flow.

The developed connectivity solution leverages a modular Python-based framework with PyQt5. It creates a technical foundation to address HTM Aerotec’s specific production challenges while maintaining a cohesive user experience across different operational domains. The modular architecture allows future integration of additional data sources and visualisation capabilities as the company’s digital transformation journey progresses. The system’s functionality is distributed across three interconnected modular components that work in harmony to optimise production workflows: a tool management dashboard, a work order planning interface, and their integration in a centralised production data dashboard.

OUTCOME

The SmartProd ERP project successfully developed and implemented an integrated dashboard system that connects previously siloed software systems at HTM Aerotec. The system bridges the gap between the company’s ERP, PLM, and machining management software, creating a unified interface for production planning and monitoring.

The implementation focused on three areas:

• Tool Management System: A digital inventory of all manufacturing tools with specifications, locations, usage patterns and usage status, thus reducing tool search time.
• Work Order Scheduling: An interactive weekly dashboard displaying production schedules with dynamic adjustment capabilities for efficient resource allocation.
• Centralised Dashboard: Both components are integrated in a main dashboard that centralises production data from various sources, provides real-time visibility and improved operational decision-making.

The results from this first phase will inform the next steps of the project as machining data is collected and linked to the company’s digital infrastructure during the second phase.

This project was made possible through the Regio Deal supported by the Province of Overijssel and the Dutch State.
